On 1 September, Prince Georg Friedrich, together with his cousin Prince Christian Ludwig, took part in the celebrations marking the reburial of Emperor Otto the Great in Magdeburg Cathedral.
\nFollowing the extensive restoration of the imperial tomb, the remains of Otto the Great were reburied in his tomb during an ecumenical service, followed by a ceremonial reception.<\/p>\n
Otto the Great is regarded as one of the most important rulers of the European Middle Ages. Crowned king in 936 and proclaimed emperor in Rome in 962, he established Magdeburg as a centre of his realm. In 968, at his instigation, the city became the seat of an archbishopric. Following his death in 973, Otto was buried in Magdeburg.<\/p>\n
Magdeburg and the cathedral are closely linked to the history of the House of Hohenzollern. After Magdeburg came under Brandenburg-Prussian rule, the provostship of the cathedral was conferred upon princes of the House of Hohenzollern in the 18th century. In the 19th century, King Frederick William III personally committed himself to saving the cathedral, which was in grave danger at the time, and facilitated its restoration with the assistance of Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Upon completion of the work, the King donated the gilded crucifix and the altar Bible for St Catherine\u2019s Altar in 1834.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
