The historic tower ruins were also part of the visit.

The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was built between 1891 and 1895 in memory of Emperor Wilhelm I. Following its destruction in 1943 and 1945, the present-day complex of post-war modernist architecture was erected on this site.

The House of Hohenzollern has been committed to the Memorial Church for several generations: for example, Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia (1907–1994) and Princess Kira of Prussia (1909–1967), who had a personal connection with Egon Eiermann, accompanied and supported the reconstruction right up to the inauguration of the new church in 1961. The carillon also traces its origins to a melody composed by Prince Louis Ferdinand, which he submitted anonymously to a competition. To the left of the altar, a ‘K’ in the blue glass panels still serves as a reminder of Princess Kira to this day.

Photos: Lukas Krieger

A special event at one of Berlin’s most famous landmarks: Wolfram Weimer, Minister of State for Culture and Media, accompanied by Lukas Krieger, Member of the Bundestag and member of the Budget Committee, visited the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and symbolically presented the federal government’s grant notification for 9 million euros.
