On loan from Prince Georg Friedrich, the painting by Franz Krüger, measuring approximately 3 by 5 metres, had been part of the décor of the Federal President’s official residence for more than four decades — welcoming both citizens and state guests from all over the world.

It has now been taken down as one of the last pieces of décor. The reason is the forthcoming extensive renovation work on Bellevue Palace and the Office of the Federal President, which, according to current estimates, will take several years. Prince Georg Friedrich took the rare opportunity to view this special work once more in person from close quarters.

The history of the painting dates back to 1831: the first version was created at the behest of Tsar Nicholas I for the military gallery of the Winter Palace in St Petersburg. King Frederick William III subsequently commissioned Franz Krüger to produce a second version for the picture gallery of the Berlin Palace. The painting’s journey later took it via Monbijou Palace and Charlottenburg Palace to Bellevue Palace.

Although a secure storage facility has already been arranged for the painting, which has never left Berlin, Prince Georg Friedrich is keenly interested in ensuring that it remains accessible to the public. The search for a suitable borrower with appropriate exhibition spaces is therefore ongoing.

Since 1981, the monumental equestrian portrait of King Frederick William III of Prussia had hung in the main stairwell of Bellevue Palace.
