Ninety-one members of the family from more than five centuries are buried there. The renovation served to preserve the crypt and give it a discreet new design that allows historical classification and preserves the dignity of the place.

In addition to Prince Georg Friedrich and Princess Sophie and their children, numerous other members of the House of Hohenzollern were present, including Princes Christian Sigismund, Adalbert, Franz Friedrich, Friedrich Wilhelm, Joachim Albrecht, Alexander, Christian and Philipp, as well as Prince Christian Ludwig in his capacity as newly elected cathedral church council member.

In his speech, Prince Georg Friedrich emphasised that the crypt is not a place of glorification. The history of the House of Hohenzollern, like the history of the country, is marked by light and shadow and requires an objective and differentiated remembrance. History consists of people and decisions whose consequences extend into the present.

He also referred to his family’s long-standing connection with Berlin Cathedral, which continued even during the division of Germany. His grandfather, Prince Louis Ferdinand, had been supporting the restoration of coffins since the 1950s, and from 1979 onwards he regularly visited the construction site of the cathedral, which was undergoing reconstruction. In 1988, he made it possible for the crypt to be opened to the general public, which became permanent in 1999.

In the first two days after the reopening, more than 12,000 people visited this special place.

Photos:

Matthias Wehnert
Emma Princess of Prussia

On 1 March 2026, the Hohenzollern crypt in Berlin Cathedral was reopened after six years of renovation during a solemn service.
