At the invitation of Ambassador Livia Leu, Prince Georg Friedrich took part in a European dialogue at the Swiss Embassy in Berlin. The focus was on the special historical connection between Neuch\u00e2tel and Prussia \u2013 and its significance for today’s Europe.<\/p>\n
Together with National Councillor Damien Cottier, President of the Association Neuch\u00e2tel-Berlin, Marion Ackermann, President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, and other representatives from academia, archives and cultural institutions, discussions focused on how this long-neglected chapter of European history can be re-examined. The work of the Association Neuch\u00e2tel-Berlin and the cataloguing of the holdings in the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation’s Secret State Archives provide an important basis for this.<\/p>\n
On this occasion, Prince Georg Friedrich emphasised that the relationship between Neuch\u00e2tel and Prussia was much more than a constitutional curiosity. It was an expression of a European network of political, economic and cultural connections \u2013 with traces in numerous European countries. It is particularly noteworthy that this connection came to an end in 1857 not on the battlefield, but at the negotiating table: diplomacy instead of escalation.<\/p>\n
Between 1707 and 1848, the kings of Prussia were also princes of Neuch\u00e2tel. For more than 140 years, there was thus a personal union between Berlin and what is now the Swiss canton, where, from 1786 onwards, Prussian coins were also minted for the Swiss market.
